Illegal Immigration dialogue continues in the Mainstream: Ugly Betty
ABC's hit comedy Ugly Betty is one of the Best shows on television right now. Besides Ugly Betty being incredibly funny and heart warming, taking the some of the most notable elements of novela and mixing it with traditional sitcoms and it showcases a diverse cast with the title character being a young Latina and is produced by another famous Latina- Salma Hayek.
Last night's episode was funny and touching as always but in the last few minutes of the show, a very serious issue surfaced in the fictional Suarez' family- Betty's dad did not have a social security because as he relunctantly confessed to Betty, the father had been in the United States illegally.
I think that it was a very risky and bold move for the Show's writers and producers to address such a "political" issue especially in an election year. I think that considering the fact the President Bush , has just signed a bill for the construction of a "fence" to keep out illegal immigrants this storyline is more relevant than ever.
