Ricky Martin Speaks Out Against Human Trafficking
The Puerto Rican pop star and UNICEFF Goodwill Ambassador, Ricky Martin paid a visit to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 to speak to lawmakers about human trafficking. Martin said, “Child trafficking is a global nightmare, it is the modern day form of slavery.” Human Trafficking is a serious issue which includes sexual exploitation, forced marriage. sweat shop and forced labor as well as prostitution. It affects mostly children and women. Human trafficking is said to affect over 2 million people a year.
Ricky Martin has launched his own foundation called, People for Children after his encounter with three Indian girls who were living in the street and were about to be forced into prostitution. Martin hopes to help bring an end to human trafficking especially trafficking of children.
The Latin Recording Academy will be honoring Ricky Martin at a tribute dinner on November 1st as the 2006 Person of the Year for all of his humanitarian efforts.
