Deportes: 4th Annual Premios Fox Sports Awards

The 4th Annual Premios Fox Sports Awards went down on December 15th, 2006 at the Jackie Gleason Theater for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida. This awards ceremony celebrates the accomplishments of Latino athletes and personalities. The ceremony began with a red-carpet entrance and some performances by Juan Fernando Fonseca and Christian Castro.

Among the winners were the Venezuelan Cy Young Award winner, Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins who was named outstanding baseball player, the Puerto Rican boxer, Miguel Cotto who was given the outstanding boxer award, and Jose Sulaiman who was awarded the outstanding lifetime achievement award for boxing.

Among the nominees were Marc Anthony, nominated for 4 awards including Male Artist of the Year, reggaetonero, Daddy Yankee also nominated for 4 awards , the salsa group, Nklabe, grupo Aventura, Thalia, Julieta Venegas, RBD, Victor Manuelle, Sin Bandera, Shakira and many more.

Chile's Pinochet dies at 91

Agosto Pinochet, the controversial general and President of Chile during the 1970s to 1990 died December 10, 2006. About three weeks ago , after his 91st birthday -he issued a public statement acknowledging his last days, declaring his patriotism to Chile and taking full responsibility for his actions.

La Presidenta of Chile, Michele Bachelet, stated that Pinochet will NOT receive a state funeral because of his legacy of corruption and torture.

Tecnologia: Nintendo wii VS PS 3

Over 600,000 Nintendo Wiis have been sold in the United States and Canada alone compared to the 400,000 Play Station 3s that were sold. Both the Nintendo Wii and the Play Station 3 have received a lot of hype and customers have done loqueras to get their hands on these popular video games consoles.

By the end of the year, Nintendo plans to ship 4 million units to the US while Play Station 3 plans to ship 1 million. Not only do we hear that the Nintendo Wii has been selling more consoles but we also hear that the Nintendo Wiii is cheaper (prices range between $200-$250) than the Play Station 3 which ranges from $500-$600.

"This 8-week workshop is a mix of amazing films and powerful open-mics. We will alternate weekly, 1st week film screening, 2nd week open-mic, etc."
The film we screened last Sunday, was JAILS, HOSPITALS and HIP HOP, followed by a special appearance by Danny Hoch, a Brooklyn actor, performance artist and hip-hop activist, who spoke about his career path as a writer/performance artist and his involvement with the growth and evolution of hip hop.
This Sunday, we will have the open-mic related to topics of jails, hospitals, hip-hop and anything else on the minds of our poets and our community.

Ricky's foundation has been bringing awareness to the issue of Human Traficking, especially kids, most recently going to Washington last month to speak to a Congressional panel about the scope of this problem.

Ricky will also have a new album and DVD Ricky Martin: Unplugged which will be out next week.

Illegal Immigration dialogue continues in the Mainstream: Ugly Betty

ABC's hit comedy Ugly Betty is one of the Best shows on television right now. Besides Ugly Betty being incredibly funny and heart warming, taking the some of the most notable elements of novela and mixing it with traditional sitcoms and it showcases a diverse cast with the title character being a young Latina and is produced by another famous Latina- Salma Hayek.

Last night's episode was funny and touching as always but in the last few minutes of the show, a very serious issue surfaced in the fictional Suarez' family- Betty's dad did not have a social security because as he relunctantly confessed to Betty, the father had been in the United States illegally.

I think that it was a very risky and bold move for the Show's writers and producers to address such a "political" issue especially in an election year. I think that considering the fact the President Bush , has just signed a bill for the construction of a "fence" to keep out illegal immigrants this storyline is more relevant than ever. Susie gets Casada!

The Dominicana & Boricua MTV VJ and former Miss USA, Susie Castillo, got married this weekend. Susie married her long time boyfriend, Matthew Leslie in her home state of Massachusets.

Susie became Miss USA in 2003 and soon after that became a host on TRL and several other MTV specials. Susie will make her film debut next year in a movie called Underdog.

After losing a lot of their key players, the New York Mets demonstrated that they can handle it. El boricua, Carlos Delgado made 4 hits during the game giving the Mets a 6-5 victory against the L.A. Dodgers. (Game 2 is scheduled for TODAY @ 8pm.)

The N.Y. Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers Game 2 was postponed due to the rain. Game 2 has been re-scheduled for TODAY @ 1:05pm. Yankees lead the series 1-0.

Oakland Athletics' second baseman, Mark Ellis broke his right index finger during his at-bat in the 9th inning. The Athletics beat the Twins 5-2 leading the series 2-0. Game 3 is scheduled for Friday @ 4pm.

Oceanic flight 815 that was schedule to leave Sidney, Australia for Los Angeles but crashed in a seemingly deserted island. We later find out that many of the passengers on the plane are connected without even knowing it and most importantly that they are NOT alone on the island. The other group of people known as "the others" has agenda against the survivors of the plan crash which at the end of season one culminates in the Others blowing up the raft that the survivors had made as away to escape.

In Season2 , we find out that there are several hatches throughout the island and meet some of these others, in addition our survivors reunite with some passangers that were in the tail end of the plane and had a very different experience than the main survivors.

Ricky Martin Speaks Out Against Human Trafficking

The Puerto Rican pop star and UNICEFF Goodwill Ambassador, Ricky Martin paid a visit to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 to speak to lawmakers about human trafficking. Martin said, “Child trafficking is a global nightmare, it is the modern day form of slavery.” Human Trafficking is a serious issue which includes sexual exploitation, forced marriage. sweat shop and forced labor as well as prostitution. It affects mostly children and women. Human trafficking is said to affect over 2 million people a year.

Ricky Martin has launched his own foundation called, People for Children after his encounter with three Indian girls who were living in the street and were about to be forced into prostitution. Martin hopes to help bring an end to human trafficking especially trafficking of children.

The Latin Recording Academy will be honoring Ricky Martin at a tribute dinner on November 1st as the 2006 Person of the Year for all of his humanitarian efforts.

The New York Yankees celebrated last night as they clinched their way into the playoffs. Although they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays last night 3-2, they won yet another division title. This is their 9th consecutive AL East title, all thanks to the Boston Red Sox who lost 8-2 against the Minnesota Twins.

For those of you who do not know -today is the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month is from Sept. 15 until Oct. 15. According to infoplease.com:

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countriesÂCosta Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.

The term Hispanic, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any race. On the 2000 Census form, people of Spanish/Hispanic/Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or "other Spanish/Hispanic/Latino." More than 35 million people identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino on the 2000 Census.

As we mentioned a few days ago Marc Anthony & Jennifer Lopez are in the Toronto Film Festival promotion their movie El Cantante.

People.com wrote this on thier site today

At the Toronto Film Festival premiere of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's movie El Cantante Tuesday, Anthony explained why he and his wife work so well together both onscreen and off: "Just simple love," he said.

Lopez proved it when she walked across the stage and kissed her husband on the lips before introducing the biopic of salsa legend Hector Lavoe, which she and Anthony star in and coproduced.

Did their relationship make it hard to work together? "Marc and I met working, so it wasn't really an issue," she said. "We know each other's work rhythm." Another key to their success: "We don't do anything that we don't believe in. … It was a passion project for both of us, and I've been trying to get it made for five years."

Anthony and Lopez play Lavoe and his wife, Puchi, who had a volatile relationship – but those who worked on the film during its shoot last summer agree that the couple were a great team in real life.

Costar John Ortiz said that on set, "They were holding hands, looking at each other with those eyes that people who are in love look at each other with. I think they are just very huggy-dovey. They're very nurturing."

Said producer Julio Caro, "They're very close. It's a tight relationship. You can tell there's a lot of love there and a lot of respect. Working with them was special."

Anthony and Lopez handled playing a dysfunctional couple well, writer-director Leon Ichaso told PEOPLE. The atmosphere on the set was "Fun, fun. Even when he punched her so hard, he broke through her skin. Marc had to wear so many rings, and one of those blows broke her skin. And we all had a good laugh. She's tough."

Lopez has said she'd like to work on another production with Anthony: a baby. "They have everything else but that," Ichaso said. "That's what would make them good parents. They now have the success and everything else, and they would take the time off to enjoy it. It would complete them."

Dancing with the Stars : Back & Mejor que NUNCA

I'm not going to lie you, I watch both the previous seasons of Dancing with the Stars and I really liked it.. But this time around I knew it was gonna be on! Hay alguien para todos...

Let's start with Mario Lopez aka Slater from Saved by the Bell... As expected, he will be the couple to beat according to the judges. He really moved well and obviously has great rhythm
(we remember Slater always dancing in Bayside...lol).

Mario is definitely on his way to make his big comeback this Fall. First Dancing with the Stars, he will also appear in the super edgy FX drama Nip/Tuck and as we reported a few months ago- hosting a dating show on SiTV called the Dating Factory.

Many of you hardcore football fans may be shocked to hear that Emmitt Smith was AWESOME last night. Following in Jerry Rice's footsteps, Emmitt Smith will surely be around until the end of the Competition.

Mr. Clean, Mr. Clean...lol... WTH happened to Joey Lawrence... he was soooo cute in Blossom. His performance was ok last nigh, but We'll be watching him and his head very closely.

Monique Coleman from Disney's High School Musical's was there and ready to compete, she was very cute so we look forward to seeing here there.

Dear Latweenos,

School:
I got my school schedule. I kind of like it. There are a lot of benefits to it. For example, I get out at 1:30 on Mondays which is great. But I have to be in school 20 minutes earlier this year which sucks. But I have to be in school by 10:10 on Thursdays which is also great. Too bad I can't enjoy that because I'm on the ultimate Frisbee team. It's the big sport at Beacon. I'm not sure if I mentioned that I went to Beacon. Anyway practice is at 6:30 in the morning. So I'll be at school any way. But I guess it'll give me time to sleep in the library or do some homework that I might not have done the night before. So I have mixed feelings about it all.
As for the classes themselves, I have Mr. Jacobs for history which BLOWS SO MUCH! I had him last year for math and he was such a P**K. I hate him SO MUCH. I got digital film which is awesome because I get to make my own movies this year. I don't have to take global this year. Now it's American history. Personally I would rather global. I don't like American history. I take Chemistry which should be fun. Making things explode and what not. I love English class; always have. I like to read and then discuss books. I was also promoted to the next level of Spanish which is cool. Most people can't understand why I chose to take Spanish if I'm Latino and already know it. But I want to learn to speak proper Spanish. Castellano is what they teach us. It's the Spanish that is spoken in Spain . I really like the class itself because I learn a lot. I never knew how to write in Spanish, but now I can write in Spanish almost as well as I can write in English.

Friends:
I went school shopping with Matt the other day. I got everything that I needed which is a relief. It was a good day and Matt and I got a chance to talk. He told me he didn't mean to ignore me. He also said he only started hanging out with those other kids because he felt he didn't fit in with out group of friends. I told him that was bull and he should have just said something. I realize that just saying something is the obvious answer. But why is it that when it's you, you never seem to think of it? You always think if you do say something, things will go wrong in someway. Well point is Matt and I have patched things up which is good.
Well later that day we met up with Colleen and Kyle and went to go skate (yes I do skate board; I'm just learning so I suck but it's fun so I keep doing it). We had a lot of fun. It was getting late so we decided to go and get pizza. While we were at the pizza place we were all talking and laughing. Matt did his impressions of people like teachers or his mom. Colleen laughed and play fought with Kyle. Kyle laughed and pretended to be hurt when Colleen hit him. And I sat back and watched. I laughed a lot. It was the most fun I had in a long time and we weren't even doing anything special. Just hanging out and having pizza. Then I began to think, these are the best days of my life. Someday I will tell my children stories about when I was learning how to skate or about getting pizza at Sal and Carmine's with friends. I was feeling nostalgic about things that weren't even over yet. Is that possible? At that moment I suddenly began to appreciate me youth in a new way and for once I wasn't in a hurry to grow up. Then I felt bad about all of the years that I wasted wanting to be older. For once I wanted to stay 17 forever.

Love Life:
Emily and I are still in the same position as we were in before. Where stuck and I'm not sure if I should put in the effort to get us unstuck. At my age I shouldn't be committed to anything serious. I should be exploring my options. But I think I actually love this girl. I think that's what really scares me. I fell so different when I'm with her. When I'm with her all of my doubts about us leave and I'm genuinely happy. Should I condemn my happiness in pursuit of something that might be different? Not necessarily good, just different. I think I'm going to talk to her about this soon. I am happy when I'm with her don't get me wrong. It just seems like there are way to few opportunities to be with her recently, and that can't improve when school starts. We don't go to the same school.

My name is Vicky. I'm a freshman at Cathedral High School in the city. This summer I didnt go anywhere. But that didn't stop me from getting ready for school. I had to read three books this summer, as a summer assignment. Well I didnt complete it just yet (im working on it). At the beginning of July me and my best friend took classes at Bronx Community College, it was for extra help in math.These classes were a MAJOR help. I learned more then I had already in 8th grade. And the great thing was these classes were FREE. And only for 4 weeks. Some other things I did was review some of my old notes & refresh my memory. So this year I hope it goes smoothly and good. It's my first time in highschool and I am very excitedddd. And Good Luck too all students and may you all have a wonderful school year!!

Dear Latweenos,

My name is Jonny. I am a 17 year old Latweeno and at this point all I can think about is college. I am entering my junior year this September and it scares the C**p out of me. I know I still have a bit of time before I have to really worry about it but it still scares me because I know freshman who are already applying. I think I just need to chill and just take things one headache at a time.

So school is about to start and all of my friends are getting back now. They all coming back from the most exotic places. I spent my summer working. Didn't hang out with friends from school too much, so it's good that they're back. It has been fun hanging out with all of them but everything seems different. People who I used to love hanging out with aren't the same anymore. It's kind of hard to explain so please try and bear with me. Well lets start with my friend Travis. He broke up with his girlfriend Lusi. He's been doing some pretty reckless S**t ever since. He's just not the same and he swears he's fine but he doesn't want to talk about it. I'm really worried about him cause he's one of my best friends. But i guess I'll have to wait till he wants my help.

Now for Matt. Matt has been my best friend for the past 2 years. We've been through alot together and do everything together. But now all he wants to do is hang out with this other group of kids and completly ignores me.

My girlfriend Emily is acting different too. We've been seeing each other for the past 4 months. Things were going really well with us but now I'm not too sure. We've been spending less and less time together and I can't decide whether that's a good thing or not. Because I've slowly been disillusioned with teenage love. I think at my age I shouldn't be in a long term relationship. I mean your only young once. I think I should be using this time to see what's out there. Maybe I'll like that more. But at the same time I've developed real feelings for her. I really like her... maybe even more. But isn't it always true love until it's over?

Those are just a few examples anyway.

Well I guess one thing is for sure. This year is gonna be really different.

"Reggaeton" is being produced by the boricua singer/actress, Jennifer Lopez in conjunction with SONY BMG Flims. It's truly an accomplishment considering that Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics was number one last week and Outkast's Idlewild was released on the same day...A Cinderella Story, selling over 200, 000 copies in it's first week.

Very rarely are publicly assembled groups through television, i.e. Making the Band, transition successfully into the charts and into the biz... The success of Danity Kane is similar to the success that the Mexican-based supergroup RBD has experiencing for the last few years. RBD surfaced from the Soap Opera "Rebelde" when the actors released their debut album Rebelde and instantly took off. RBD has since released 5 albums and toured around the world... Hopefully Danity Kane will follow in their footsteps.

After many years of being taught that the solar sytem consisted of: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, astronomers have now declared that Pluto is no longer included in the solar system. After years of debate, astronomers have named Pluto a "dwarf planet."

Ever since its discovery in 1930, Pluto has not only been the smallest planet but it always stood apart from the other planets. Pluto is 1600 miles in diameter and is smaller than the Moon.

Astronomers came up with new rules and criterias for planets:

They must orbit the Sun.
It must be big enough for gravity to squash it into a round ball.
It must have cleared other things out of the way in its orbital neighborhood

The biggest rivals in baseball history, The New York Yankees and The Boston Red Sox went at it for 5 games in a row in Fenway Park. The New York Yankees SWEPT The Boston Red Sox, something that they have not done in more than half a century. The New York Yankees went from 1 1/2 games ahead of The Boston Red Sox to 6 1/2 games ahead leading the AL East. The players exhanged handshakes and hugs as they celebrated their victory. The manager of The New York Yankees, Joe Torre was very proud of his team and stated in an interview with Fox Sports that, "It was emotional. When you're sitting there, a manager's dream is to have these guys, their attitude. The guys that didn't play today - you had to be in the dugout to hear the support that they gave each other."

The New York Yankees will face The Boston Red Sox in "The house that Ruth built" on September 15-17 in a 3 series game.

Big Boi & Andre 3000 in Hell's Kitchen NYC

OMGGGGGGG!!!!! So I'm at work and someone tells me that Grammy Award Winning Hip- Hop Superstars OUTKAST are right around the corner from my job. I rush to get there and they are outside the Sony Studios in Hell's Kitchen just hanging out apparently waiting for someone/ something. I ask to take a pic and they were super kind and cool and posed...

I went back to my office and realize the camera phone did NOT save the pic... So I went back and they were still there. I told them what happened and they were sooooo cool and even chit chatted with me.

It was soooo refreshing to see real artist who were totally accessible, down to earth individuals without the 30 ppl entourage.... Don't forget to support their Album and Movie which comes out this week

Teen's Choice Awards

How do it put this mildly... The Teen Choice awards SUCKED! If the big finish of your show is the world premiere of Britney Spear's husband, Kevin Federline, that should have been our first clue in knowing that this award show was not really our TEENS choices but the advertisers and Fox's Choice.

There were a few cool things about the show- They have a myspace.com video award. The Choice Courage Award was given to a teenage boy named Jason McElvain who had been diagnosed as autistic as a child and after much perseverance was on the High School basketball and managed to score 6 3-point in a ROW! To demonstrate how hard this was they showed NBA superstars Lebron James, Dwayne Wade & Carmelo Anthony attemptin to sink 6 3pointer in a row- and NONE of the where about to do that...

None of the performances were really good. As bad a Kevin Federline's performance was the one positive thing I can say is that at least he sung live unlike another very popular artist who "sang live" last night.

Jessica Alba, was a presenter and winner for Choice Hottie- thanked her team of clothes, hair stylist, make up artist, and the air brush artist that made her look the way she looks. Thanks, Jessica for reminding us that celebrities are NOT PERFECT and their whole look is an image.
